12th June:

We went to Batu Caves on the outskirts of KL.  Easy to get to but when you see the pics you'll see there were quite a few stairs to climb.  As well, to help with their building program, any one without a heart condition etc, was asked to carry up a small bucket of soil or a brick.  No bricks in sight we carried up the soil.

On the way from the station we walked through some sellers of trinkets etc and I hate to say it but the stench of faeces of some sort and the amount of refuse surrounding them was awful.  The women there just sat around talking.   Actually, the cleanliness of KL is noticeable and places like Kota Bharu and this place, quite popular with tourists, stood out as being uncared for, little pride in their environment.  (A bit harsh!!)

There were monkeys at the entrance to the caves area.  Cute as.  Maybe the smell came from them.

Batu Caves are a limestone formation.  Quite magnificent, huge cavern and some smaller areas too but just as magnificent.
There are a series of caves and cave temples.  One of the most popular shrines outside o India and is the focal point of Hindu Festival of Thaipusam. Said to be about 400000000 years old.  Rises about 100m above the ground. The statue is of Lord Murugan, comprises 1550cubic metres of concrete, 250 tons of steel bars, 300litres of gold paint (which comes from Thailand).  (quote Wikipedia)
There were people who had come to worship there.
Oh just to confuse you: this photo is of the shoe repair man who sits just across the lane from our hotel.  His place is immaculate and every evening he packs it all away and leaves it unnoticed opposite where he is sitting against the large pole at the end of the walkway.
The monkeys prefer maccas!!
On the train station at KL Sentral, Craig couldn't resist this photo!
Mummy and twins:  "Keep close, please!"

 Here he is:  Lord M,
Yes those are the steps up to the caves!
 And yet closer.
 Yep we climbed them.
Sorry photos out of order.  This is approaching the area of the steps.
 Before reaching the steps area.
A closer look will reveal the monkey God.  A huge statue too.
 This says quite a lot.
Today we climbed a LOT of steps because there were steps everywhere we turned!  And we also came down a lot too!
View from the top.  The distance is smog.  The amount of cars here is amazing.  Most are small cars.
Inside the vaults.  The size was huge.
 Stalactite.
 Shrine.

 More steps inside!
They're building a temple inside I guess.  Some beautiful work.  Nature is better though.

 Cute shoes!

We bought 2 squares of Indian sweets and we are eating 1/4 per evening.
